Anemone (Ranunculaceae)
A large genus of plants with many beautiful, garden worthy species. A. canadensis is a native species to the northeast and flowers in our shady woodland edges. Many species are aggressive in a garden setting and best on the edges. They are divided roughly into three categories. Spring flowering species with either tuberous or rhizomatous roots that grow in woodland or alpine pasture. Tuberous species that are from places with hot dry summers. There are some fancy cut flower hybrids from this group. Finally, the fall flowering species that are 3’-4’ tall with fibrous roots. All come in a wide variety of colors. Most of the hardy species like a moist, fertile and well drained soil and part sun. A drier location can keep it less aggressive. The cut, palmate foliage stays nice all summer and the spring flowering species often re-flower a bit in late summer.
AVAILABLE THIS YEAR
A. huphensis ‘Rose Beauty’ - Fall flowering, white to pink flowers, 3’-4’ tall.
A. multifida ‘Rubra’ - Summer flowering to 12”, red form of the N American species. 4” pot.
