Astragalus (Leguminosae)
Astragulus, or milk vetch, grows 2-4 ft. with alternate, pinnate leaves and yellow, pea-like flowers. A massive genus of over 3000 species worldwide with several garden worthy species. We have been propagating A. membranecous. It is not particularly showy, but an important adaptogen herb and one of the 50 essential herbs in TCM. A well behaved 4ft tall, clumping plant that likes a deep well drained and slightly alkaline soil. Roots are harvested in the Fall after 4-6 years.

Astragalus is a large genus with many garden worthy species including some unique alpine species for the rock garden. We have only scratched the surface so far and we look forward to trialing more native and exotic species.
