Gypsophila (Caryophyllaceae)

$10.00

Baby’s breath is well known as a misty filler for bouquets that dry nicely. Producing a cloud of tiny flowers on stiff stems with narrow leaves, this plant also looks great in a mixed flower garden. There are over 100 species spread over dry, alkaline, alpine habitats from the Mediterranean to China. It has escaped cultivation and has found a niche in the high cool desert of the US and Canadian west, where the plants are harvested commercially. In the Northeast, our damp climate and acid soils seem to keep it in check. It is tap rooted and drought tolerant, and requires a dry, well drained, alkaline soil to thrive. Gypso-philia means lime loving. We hope to have some smaller alpine species in the future.

AVAILABLE THIS YEAR

G. paniculata - A large, 4’ herbaceous “shrub”, covered in tiny flowers.
