Hepatica is a small genus of about 10 species of spring flowering, woodland plants of the northern temperate regions that grow in humus rich and well drained soil. Flowering in April and May with blue, pink or white flowers that rise on a solitary stem from a 4”-6” basal of fused, tri lobed, glossy leaves. The foliage persists all summer as a nice slow growing ground cover that can be variable with silver or white marbling, purple beneath and often remains evergreen through the winter. A top notch native woodland plant. There are two species occurring in the northeast US. H. americana has more rounded leaves, H. acutiloba has more deeply cut leaves and more sharply pointed leaves. Both have variable flower colors.
