Hydrastis canadensis (Ranunculaceae)

from $8.00

Golden Seal is a native woodland plant of Eastern North America with a long history of medicinal use. It produces a single stem from a yellow, knobby rhizome that creates clumping crowns. It has two palmate leaves and produces an inconspicuous white flower in the spring that matures into a fleshy, raspberry-like fruit. It is a very slow growing plant, taking up to 5 years to flower from seed while also being very sensitive to disturbances in the forests where they grow. That, coupled with over harvesting, has reduced the native populations and is now wild harvest is tightly regulated. I have been gathering seeds from a patch at Cady’s Falls Gardens for several years and can now offer 3-4 year old, seed grown plants. A storied native plant that grows well here and will slowly colonize a rich woodland. As with all medicinal plants, care should be taken when consuming it, and seeking medical advice is advised. Safe used externally.
