Elecampane is a showy and hardy, rhizomatous perennial native to Europe and western Asia. The large, 4 in. wide, sunflower-like, yellow flowers atop a robust stalk up to 6 ft. with a mound of large, woolly basal leaves up to 2 ft. long. Best grown in full sun, and is adaptable to most soils. A valuable medicinal herb rich in inulin. The root is harvested after 2-3 years. The plant has become naturalized on roadsides in Vermont.
