Linum Perenne (Linaceae)
Perennial flax is a hardy tufted plant with narrow spirally arranged leaves. The flowers are a nice true blue and grow atop the mound on tough wiry stems. Each flower blooms for just a day, but it continues for nearly 8 weeks in early summer and sporadically until frost. Though considered a short lived plant, they seem to persist for several years. It can also reseeds for us without becoming too weedy, at least in our climate. Annual flax has a long history of human use. It is still grown to make linen cloth and linseed oil.
Sold in quarts.
