Sanguinea Canadensis (Papavaraceae)

from $10.00

Bloodroot is a well known native to the spring woodlands of Northeast America and the sole species from the genus. Interestingly, it has a single counterpart in Japan, though it is also considered its own species. Delicate white flowers rise first with a shiny palmate leaf that is first wrapped around the flower stem and unfurls as the flower passes. By midsummer the plant has become dormant again. The plant can colonize small areas by rhizomatous roots and seems unfazed by poor, rocky soil. Bloodroot is a reference to the bright red, caustic juices that come from the root. It has a long history a dye plant. It is a beautiful, if ephemeral, addition to the woodland garden.

This year we are excited to have some of the rare ‘Multiplena’, a double form of the flower that looks like a mini lotus blossom. This sterile flower persists longer than the species, and the foliage also stays nice longer persisting into late summer in a cool spot.

AVAILABLE THIS YEAR

S. canadensis - The native Northeastern species.

S. canadensis ‘Multiplena’ - The double flowering form of the species from a natural selection. A top notch perennial!

Multiplena sold in 2 quart pots with at least two tips. Species sold in 4”x8” box.
