Sanguisorba (Rosaceae)
Burnet is a genus of 18 species with world wide distribution in the northern hemisphere. It is an elegant perennial with pinnate, oblong and toothed leaves and wiry stems topped with terminal spikes of fluffy flowers in white, pink, red or greenish white. Burnet leaves are edible and a nice addition to Spring salads. The roots have been used medicinally as an astringent to staunch bleeding and promote healing. An important herb in Chinese medicine and a nice perennial garden plant. There are many interesting northern species from this genus and we have been digging around to find the best.
AVAILABLE THIS YEAR
S. canadensis - Native to Northeast US and Canada. A nice clumping meadow plant that forms long cones of white bottlebrush flowers inlet summer and autumn. Excellent pollinator plant!
S. menziesii - Wine red plumes similar to canadensis, but drooping. Midsummer flowering.
S. minor ‘Little Angel’ - A dwarf cultivar to 6” with tiny variegated leaves forming a tidy clump. Little stems with a wine red flower tuft at the end that persists. Likes good drainage.
S. officinalis - European species. Tall to 6ft, and covered with red wiry stems with the characteristic tuft flower.
Sold in gallon pots. Little Angel in 2 quart pots.
