Aquiegia (Ranuculaceae)

$15.00

Columbine is an invaluable perennial. Grown for foliage and pretty, spurred flowers that are elegant and span the rainbow of colors. Likes a light, but moist, fertile soil and can stand partial shade.Excellent cut flowers! We mostly grow the vulgaris species. The caerulea are better flowering, lots of colors on  strong 30 in. stems. The vulgaris tend to hold their foliage better making it an all around better landscaping plant. Columbines are not super long lived. They seem to fade after five or six years, often discreetly replaced by seedlings that tend to revert back to species forms.

We have several of the vulgaris species: ‘Alba’ is a white single with a spur, ‘Heidi’ is an antique pink with similar form. One of my other favorites are the ‘Stella Plenas’. Double, spurless flowers in a myriad of colors. Check in for availability of ‘Ruby Port’ and’Blue Barlow’. We also are growing several other species. A pure, spurred blue-purple called alpine, a small rock garden variety. A. canadensis is our native species with orange and yellow, spurred flowers. Lovely grown in a garden setting. We also have an interesting variety called ‘Woodside Strain’. It has variegated foliage that persists all summer, and simple spurred, purple flowers. There are several small alpine species native to western US we are growing out. A nice rock garden specimen
