Codonopsis Pilosula (Campanulaceae)
Bellflower, or Korean Bellflower, is a perennial vine that can grow up to 6 ft. It has pale blue to green 1 in. long flowers, and light purple at their base that nod, looking like small bells. Very ornamental. It needs some winter protection in our climate, but good snow cover seems sufficient. It likes well drained soil and a sunny location. The roots are an important herb in TCM and are considered equal to ginseng and astragalus for its use as an adaptogen. Need 3-4 years to harvest. The sweet roots can be sometimes difficult to protect from winter predators. Cut back after flowering to avoid excessive seeding.
