Purpurea, the most common and where all the ornamental breeding originates; augustifolia, with the highest medicinal properties; and Tennesseensis, a species found isolated in the US southeast, but closely related to augustifolia. Both the augustifolia and the Tennesseensis are tap rooted, instead of clumping, and will send their roots deep into the soil, mining micronutrients and making the plants drought resistent and ideal for a hot, dry location. We have also been propagating the pale coneflower, E. pallid. This species has narrow, delicate light purple pedals that reflex dramatically from the central cone.
