Moscheotos is the hardy species of the vast hibiscus genus which mostly comprise tropical species. Though not typically found this far north, H. moscheutos grows wild in parts of southern New England. A statuesque perennial that comes back to life in late spring, after you think it did not make it over the winter. Large fuzzy leaves with three lobes emerge, on sturdy stems putting on a quick and impressive display. Late in the summer large flowers in shades from red, pink to white often, with a crimson center, emerge putting on a tropical show. Likes a rich soil and a sunny spot, especially against a building where it can soak up some heat.

Our selections

We are propagating several types, the wild form, H. moscheutos, sometimes called swamp mallow and two cultivars that are grown from seed, ‘Luna Mix’ and ‘Disco Belle’.The  fancy cultivars are often grown from cuttings and patented. They typically make a tidier garden plant and display colorful foliage.
