Miscanthus Sinensis (Poaceae)
Grasses are a wonderful addition to the perennial garden offering nice contrast to flowers and broad leaves. Miscanthus, or silver grass, is a clump forming grass that can grow 6’-8’ tall with red, scarlet and purple plumes in late summer and fall. Retains its fountain shape into the fall creating a beautiful winter display. This heat loving grass is considered invasive in some places south, but here in zone 4 it stays fairly contained. The leaves and plumes make a nice addition to late summer bouquets.
