Peony (Paeoniaceae)

$30.00

One of the most beloved species of the northern perennial gardens, peonies have native species in Asia, N. America and Europe and have been the subject to a dizzying amount of breeding. The Chinese have been breeding them for over 2000 years for beauty and medicine. In general there are two forms, an herbaceous and a woody tree form. There are also the Itoh peonies, or cross sectional, but that’s another story. There are many herbaceous types. Most people are familiar with the large, double flowers overflowing with petals.  We have chosen to focus on the single flowered or ‘species peonies’. These are mostly woodland plants that like a rich soil and even moisture. It flowers earlier than the doubles and is a more upright plant that won't flop over at the first rain. We have been collecting seeds from Cady’s Falls Gardens for the last 4 years. We are excited to offer our selection this season.
