They can grow quite large up a trellis and are hung with large purple bundles of flowers that look like a bunch of grapes. Being in the pea family, the flowers mature into bean pods. They put on quite a show in points south of us. Not typically considered hardy here, these plants are from seeds gathered at Cady’s Falls Gardens three years ago. He grows a species that has most of the best qualities of the sinensis variety, but withstands a zone 4 winter.
