Geranium (Geraniaceae) - Cranesbill
Geraniums come from a large family of ornamental plants that can be a bit confusing. There are several tender species that come from the genus pelargonium. These are the scented geraniums and the common bedding plants from the zonal and ivy leaved species. The true hardy geraniums occur around the world in the northern hemisphere. We have a wild, native species in Vermont called G. robertanium or Herb robert. We have been growing out several varieties of hardy geraniums. Some are quite vigorous, if not a bit weedy, but great for controlling an edge. There are also some smaller, more refined varieties that fit well into a tidy garden. They all grow well in the shade, but thrive with more sun and evenly moist soil in our cool summer climate. Dry soil can control its growth.
