Astrantia (Apiaceae) Masterwort
An old cottage garden favorite that has been cultivated since the 1600’s. There are about 8 species with most cultivars coming from the ‘major’ species. Some, though less common, come from the maxima species. The “pincushion” flowers grow on wiry stems in shades of pink, white and occasionally red. It flowers from late spring through summer in a good spot. The faded flower bracts offer continued interest into late summer and the deeply divided, palmate leaves remain attractive all season. Likes a dappled, sunny spot with good drainage, but often does fine in full sun in our cool summer climate.
