Astilboides tabularis (Saxifrage)
This plant is native to northern China and Korea. It is the sole species of the astilboides genus and was once part of the rodgersia genus. For the northern shade garden, there is no other plant that creates such a dramatic foliage affect with its large dinner plate size leaves. It puts up a spike of creamy white flowers in late Summer, but it is the leaves that make this plant so stunning. Grows best in a shady spot with consistent moisture. Give this guy plenty of room as it can grow 3-5 ft tall with a spread of 4 ft. A top notch, clumping perennial that can be a real show stopper in the woodland garden.
