Hydrastis canandensis (Ranunculaceae) Goldenseal

The famous woodland medicinal plant native to the old forests of eastern Canada and the eastern US. Mostly over harvested in its native stands for its medicinal uses and loss of habitat through logging and development. We have been growing plants from seed collected at Cady’s Falls Nursery for the last 4 years and now have well established, hardy plants available. Grows best in a rich woodland setting. It grows from a single stem and has two palmately lobed leaves. After a few years it will reach maturity by putting up a simple white flower from the center in the spring followed by a berry shaped, red seed fruit. You can keep a patch going by breaking up the fruit when it’s mature and tucking the seeds into the ground around your patch.
