Codonopsis Pilosula (Campanulaceae) - Korean bell flower
Bellflower, or Korean Bellflower, is a perennial vine that can grow up to 6 ft. It has pale blue to green 1 in. long flowers, and light purple at their base that nod, looking like small bells. Very ornamental. Needs some winter protection in our climate. Likes a well drained soil and a sunny location. The roots are an important herb in TCM and are considered equal to ginseng and astragalus for its use as an adaptogen. Need 3-4 years to harvest. The sweet roots can be difficult to protect from winter predators.
