Thalictrum

Thalictrum

We have a very nice species of thalictrum that grows native here in Vermont in woodlands and streabanks known as meadowrue. Named for the leaves that resemble the European rue. It puts up a tuft of white flowers in the early summer and the plant remains stately and green for the rest of the season. A few years ago I was introduced to some of the cultivars and native Asian species and there are some beautiful plants. This year we have two species, T. Delavayi, which is a 3’ species similar to our native, but bushier and with small, pink purple flowers blooming in July and August. The other species, T. Roechburnum, I was introduced to at Cady’s Falls Nursery, 6’ tall and covered in those small pink purple flowers, blooming late in the season, well into September. A stately, architectural plant that is big, but also wispy and light. As per the natives, it likes rich, cool, moist soil and part sun, part shade.
