Aconitum (Ranunculacae) - Monkshood, Wolfsbane

Monkshood is another plant from that strange and beautiful family the ranunculus’ that produce some of our nicest perennials. In late summer and fall the plant produces 3-4’ spikes with, typically, striking blue flowers that were thought to resemble a helmet or hood. Known as a poison since antiquity and used on arrows in battle, many of the names make reference to this use. Care should be taken when dividing. This is a rugged plant for partial shade or full sun in a damp location. It is long lived and will over time form into large clumps. There are several species each flowering at different times through the summer.
