Buddleja Davidii (Loganiaceae) Butterfly bush
The butterfly bush or Summer lilac is a showy, deciduous shrub with panicles of fragrant white and purple flowers in mid to late Summer. Very attractive to butterflies. Though considered marginal here, our seed grown plants seem to do well with a bit of mulch at the base. Needs a sunny location and well drained soil. It dies back to the ground each year. The binomial name for this plant honors a French missionary to China, Armand David, an early European to identify this Chinese native. Many of the scientific names for plants have a very Euro-centric bias.
