Dodecatheon Hendersonii (Primulaceae) - American primrose

This species of shooting star is native to Northwestern US. In the same family as European primrose, it has also been called American primrose. Shooting stars come up and flower in May and die back during the summer. As such, it likes a moist spring spot that dries out during the summer. The black and purple flowers are unique with the stamens thrust out and the sepals bent back, similar to a cyclamen.
