Diphyllia cymosa (Berberidaceae) American umbrella plant

This is a choice native plant that is endemic to the forests of the Southeastern US but has proven equally hardy in Central Vermont. It has large, toothed and umbrella shaped leaves that can be 12"in across. It makes an umbel of small white flowers in the spring followed by blue berries on a red stem that persists into the fall. Does well in the shade, but could probably handle more sun in the Northern edge of its range.
