Scutellaria Baicalensis (Lamiaceae)
There are many species of scutellaria or skullcap. The baicalensis, or baikal is from Asia where it is an important herb in Chinese medicine where it is one of the 50 fundamental herbs . The plant is in the mint family, square stem, opposite leaves, and two lipped flowers. This variety is also very ornamental with masses of purple flowers atop the plant. Likes full sun and well drained soil. The roots are used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic.
